City of Riverside – SR91 Van Buren Boulevard Interchange Improvement

Project Synopsis
CPM Partners, as a sub-consultant, provided construction management support services and field personnel to the City of Riverside on the
SR91/Van Buren Boulevard Interchange Improvement Project.

This project is the third of five phases to improve Van Buren Boulevard from the Santa Ana River north to the southerly City limit. The project widened the bridge over the 91 freeway to six lanes with dual left turn lanes. The westbound ramps were also widened to three lanes. A new eastbound onramp was constructed on Indiana Avenue. The project limits extend from Andrew Street/Primrose Avenue to the north – to Indiana Avenue to the south and about 5,000 feet along State Route 91. These changes make access to the 91 Freeway faster and easier. The resulting relief in congestion will ultimately save time, improve traffic safety, and ease access to Arlington businesses. In addition to traffic flow improvements, this project also beautifies the interchange by building new retaining walls and re-landscaping the surrounding area with water wise plant material.

The SR-91/Van Buren Boulevard Interchange Project involved the replacement of the existing overcrossing bridge with a 61-meter-long, 46-meter-wide, and 2-span cast-in-place pre-stressed concrete box Girder Bridge. The bridge was constructed in two stages with a closure pour; superstructure supported by abutments and columns on spread footings, construction of ramps including a new eastbound entrance ramp, existing eastbound entrance ramp and westbound entrance and exit ramps. The project also included construction of various retaining walls; construction, relocation and coordination of various utilities along the new alignment, including utilities passing through the bridge’s superstructure cells; installation of traffic signals at all intersections, ramp metering, streetlight, and communication lines, construction of drainage systems along the new alignment, curb and gutter, sidewalks, metal beam guard rails, slope protection, and landscaping.
